Where to get English language news from Gaza

Al-Jazeera English is the only English-language media organization present with journalists and equipment to offer comprehensive—often live from on the ground—TV news coverage, and is present across the Gaza Strip.

When the BBC shut down its Arabic service, tens of its staff joined the Al-Jazeera team. The quality of Al-Jazeera’s English language reporting on Palestine* is comprehensive, professional, and accurate.

Al-Jazeera gets a lot of flack from the usual suspects because this is true.

Broadcasting Israel’s obvious and blatant genocide has made the network a target, quite literally, with many of its journalists and their family members killed by Israel.

Al-Jazeera English’s live broadcast to YouTube is embedded above. There is also an Al-Jazeera English app that can be downloaded from your device’s app store. Al-Jazeera English is therefore available for most streaming platforms, and you can find its website at english.aljazeera.net

Al-Jazeera Arabic‘s live broadcast, which often offers extended raw footage, is also available but has no automated English subtitle option.

English language print journalism

For English language print journalism, your best general Israeli-Palestinian conflict coverage option is 972 Mag. Independent publications like The Intercept and The Grey Zone are also putting out credible reporting. The question you really need to be asking is how many journalists live among Palestinians in the actual war zone?

If you’d like to make a case to be added here, use the contact page on nigelparry.net, and be sure to let me know where your journalists are based.

Western TV media

Much of the Western TV media—BBC, ITV, CNN, ABC, NBC, etc—has been reporting embedded with the IDF, with predictable results. Some of the European TV channels such as TRT (the Turkish BBC) and France TV have decent coverage. Please note that there are no Western journalists living in Gaza.

When I lived in Ramallah, in the West Bank, from 1994-1998, I applied for an Israeli Government Press Office card as I was working for then-Middle East International magazine. Of the 760 or so foreign correspondents there, I was the only one living in the occupied territories, excluding East Jerusalem (only because a handful or two did live there).

This is why most Western news reporting about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is worthless. No one is an eyewitness to anything and they rely on Israeli government sources. Disgusting. So any time you’re reading or watching something like the BBC, New York Times, Le Monde, whatever—remember that none of these writers live alongside Palestinians. France TV’s Truth or Fake program has done some quality debunking of a lot of Israeli propaganda during its latest war on Gaza.

*Al-Jazeera is funded by the Qatari government in the same way that the BBC receives 71% of its operating costs from the British public, and PBS & NPR receive US public broadcasting funds. I wouldn’t expect Al-Jazeera’s coverage of Qatar to be balanced, but its Palestinian coverage matches up with the realities on the ground that I have experienced and can be verified from unrelated sources. During the current Gaza war, much of Al-Jazeera’s coverage simply consisted of raw footage from ground zero. It is an unparalleled source of Gaza coverage and if you aren’t watching it, you certainly don’t have the full picture of what is happening in Gaza.
